UCSC Brightlingsea recently attended the Harker’s Yard Gig Association annual awards evening. It was held at Royal Burnham Yacht Club and was the culmination of a very difficult year. Out of the 11 scheduled races only 5 were held as a result of Covid restrictions and/or inclement weather.
UCSC were very proud of their performances this year: for the first time in a very long time the club entered 6 crews for every race that was held. What a massive achievement. This meant at least 20 people were rowing and coxing regularly either in the Ladies, Mens or Mixed races – and for some people they rowed in two races. This really proves how the club is going from strength to strength.
The results were very exciting and to date are the best that the club has achieved. This is despite the introduction of the discard rule which was brought in this year and did not do the final positions any favours, but even so there were some remarkable achievements: (19 boats took part)
Ladies: 4th Violette, 14th Moliette
Mens: 7th Violette, 15th Moliette
Mixed: 2nd Violette, 10th Moliette
Overall: 4th Violette, 14th Moliette
We have ended this season on a high note, with great enthusiasm and commitment, as well as sore arms and legs and numerous blisters, and we are already looking forward to next season and everything it brings.
Wishing you all a very happy summer, and hope to see you on the water,
Suzanne and Ali , (Rowing Captains)
